The bathroom is a space where we perform all our personal hygiene activities. Usually containing  a sink, toilet, and shower or bathtub, it is one of the most heavily used areas in our homes. As such, it is also one of the dirtiest. A filthy private space is a total turnoff so be sure to follow these easy cleaning ideas to keep your bathroom sparkling and sanitized.

Walls and Countertops

Spray or wipe down surfaces with disinfectant cleaners and leave them for at least half an hour. After, rinse with hot water before drying with a clean cloth. Start on walls and countertops before making your way to the floors.

Tile Grout and Floors

Tile grout is porous and therefore highly prone to bacteria growth. To keep tiles and floors clean, use a bleach-based cleanser to scrub them down before rinsing well. Wear plastic gloves for safety and ensure that the room is well-ventilated before using any commercial cleaning products.

Toilets

There are many cleansers available in the market today to ensure your toilet is clean and disinfected properly. Simply follow the directions, and use a toilet brush to scrub stubborn spots. Flush to rinse and repeat if necessary. Don’t forget to clean your toilet brush after each use. If necessary, you may also dip your toilet brush in disinfectant diluted with water.

Sinks

Use a paste made from equal parts baking soda and water to scrub sinks. This mixture is a good alternative to harsh abrasive cleansers. Rise your sink with water after. Wipe down faucets with disinfectant regularly.

Showers

Dirt buildup can cause your showerhead to become clogged, lowering the pressure and causing it to run inefficiently. It also lets you the target of bacteria and molds while you take a bath. To prevent this, fill a plastic bag with a sufficient amount of white vinegar, dip the nozzle in, seal with a string or rubber band, and leave overnight to soak. In the morning, scrub with an old toothbrush and run your shower normally to rinse off the remaining residue.

Shower Curtains and Enclosures

Daily exposure to water and moisture can make plastic curtains and glass enclosures the perfect medium for mold and bacterial growth. Wash shower curtains regularly with your usual detergent and give it a good scrubbing before hanging out to dry in the sun. Shower enclosures can become cloudy after some time. Apply your baking soda and water mixture on the surface, and let sit for at least an hour before scrubbing away with a clean cloth. Rinse the surface with water before wiping down to dry.

Bathtubs

Tubs may be cleaned with the same mixture or plain vinegar. Stubborn dirt and marks may be addressed using mild abrasive cleansers. Simply scrub the surface and rinse the tub with hot water after.

Smart tips:

  1. Wipe wet areas after each use whenever possible to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. A squeegee is a great tool for easier drying.
  2. Leave windows open to lower the bathroom’s humidity levels. This will aid in preventing the growth of mildew. Increased air circulation and light will help keep moisture levels down.
  3. Germs will remain in the toilet even after flushing, so keep the lid down whenever you flush to avoid further contaminating other surfaces in your bathroom. If your toilet is located near your sink or vanity, store toothbrushes and other bath essentials properly.
  4. Keep your drains in good working order by pouring half a cup of baking soda, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Allow the mixture to stand for a few minutes before rinsing with boiling water. This will help dissolve dirt, grime, and grease. The baking soda and vinegar mixture will foam up and release carbon dioxide, so be sure to keep windows open and avoid inhaling the fumes.
  5. Clean and disinfect your bathroom regularly to keep your family safe from germs, bacteria, and molds.
