Determine Clutter Hotspots

Contrary to popular belief, clutter may often be visible in smaller areas but it happens in any space regardless of their size. So, the first step in time-saving home organization is identifying the areas where clutter loves to pile up.

Although it depends on the homeowners’ routine, clutter usually accumulates in these following places:

Surfaces. These are like landing zones for your everyday items. This offered convenience is the reason why they become clutter hotspots in your home. Coffee tables can be a resting place for a variety of things like remote controls, mail, magazines, and forgotten mugs. Kitchen counters are susceptible to bills and receipts from take outs, stray grocery items, and meal prep scraps. Meanwhile, desks can easily be ground zero for stationery, electronic, and knick-knack clutter.

Drawers and Cabinets. These can easily morph into mysterious black holes where things go in but never seem to come out. Since you can conveniently hide random items in them, they tolerate the out-of-sight, out-of-mind approach. This leads to a jumble of forgotten objects, making it impossible to find what you need.

Floors. Of all clutter hotpots, this is the most convenient dumping ground in your home. Kicked-off shoes, forgotten flip-flops, or even rogue sneakers that escaped the designated shoe rack all end up stranded on the floor. Dropped backpacks after a long day and purses after running errands also contribute to the clutter. Even dirty clothes that never quite make it to the hamper as well as clean laundry piles waiting to be folded or put away can quickly take over your space.

Strategic Storage Solutions

Storage solutions are a staple in time-saving home organization. Begin by designating drop zones. Using trays, baskets, or hooks, create specific areas for commonly used items like keys, caps, umbrellas, and bags. This eliminates the “drop zone shuffle” where these items end up scattered around the house. But the benefits go beyond efficiency.

Designated drop zones also indirectly impose discipline. By having a dedicated spot for these items, you (and everyone in your household) are gently nudged towards developing a habit of putting things away in their proper place.

Group similar objects together—spices with spices, tools with tools, trinkets with trinkets. You can also try arranging them by color, size, or according to your indoor routine. Invest in labeled containers or bins to further enhance clarity and keep dust at bay.

In addition, utilize vertical space. Install shelves, hanging organizers, or over-the-door hooks in areas like closets, pantries, and laundry rooms to fully maximize the space.

Multifunctional furniture not only saves space but also keeps frequently used items within easy reach. Opt for ottomans with built-in drawers, beds with storage headboards, or benches with hidden compartments.

Develop Time-Saving Habits

To break this pesky practice, one solution is the implementation of a one-touch rule. Here, instead of temporarily setting things down, you have to immediately bring them back to their original storage after use.

This routine eliminates clutter from accumulating before it becomes a time-consuming chore. For instance, putting your shoes in the shoe rack after taking them off and not leaving them by the entrance. Or instantly keeping your cosmetics in the drawers after getting ready. Such a rather strict rule is the cornerstone of time-saving organization.

Furthermore, while moving between rooms, look around for an item that doesn’t belong and take it back to its designated spot. Think of it as a mini clean-up mission every time you change rooms to keep things organized throughout the day.

It is also an undeniable fact that clutter comes from impulse purchases. So, next time you want to bring in something to your home, ask yourself if you already own something similar. Much more, if it will be used regularly or still have space to store.

Maintain Home Organization

Like any place and item, a well-organized home requires on-going care and maintenance. Life changes, and so do your storage needs. And scheduling quarterly or biannual reassessment and refining of your storage solutions is essential.

Over time, maybe there are items you no longer use or need to be repurposed. This allows you to adjust for new items and ensure your system remains efficient. By taking a proactive approach, you can keep your organization system efficient and prevent clutter from creeping back in.

Frantic days are a normal and inevitable reality. With these time-saving home organization hacks, you can create a system that makes use of your time more efficiently while maintaining your home organized. So next time you’re looking for a house item, you’ll know where to look.
