2 Reasons Why You Need to Change Your Pillow ASAP). Experts say that your pillow needs to be replaced every 2 or 3 years. However, this number varies depending on the type of pillow you have and how you take care of it.

1 Microfiber or Polyester

If you’re using a plain, old microfibre or polyester type, you have to change it every 6-12 months, or up to 2 years if you wash it as often as possible.

2 Memory Foam

This type lasts longer than the polyester one. For memory foam pillow users, you should change your headrest every 1 ½ – 3 years.

3 Feather and Down

As for feather and down pillows, the best types to repel dust mites (not to mention these last up to 10 years on average), should be changed when they no longer return to their natural shape.

4 Wool or Cotton

Wool or cotton pillows should last you around 3-5 years because of their natural, breathable material that absorbs less sweat.

Bonus tip!

To see if your cotton pillow needs replacing, fold it in half and place a book on top of it. If the book holds the fold, it’s time to shop for a new one. Also, check the tag if you can wash them. If the tag says so, try to wash (Make sure to follow the instructions!) them every 2-3 months.

5 Latex

Meanwhile, latex types can last up to 15 years because of their anti-microbial properties that make them resistant to dust. However, these pillows are not breathable so they’re prone to mold.
