Homegrown Treasures: Discover ArteFino’s Must-See Brands
ArteFino, the annual showcase of Filipino artistry, craftsmanship, and heritage, has once again brought together a vibrant collection of homegrown brands that embody this year’s theme: KaPAMANA. Through their innovative products and deep connection to tradition, these brands highlight the enduring legacy of Filipino design and craftsmanship.
Here’s a closer look at three standout brands from ArteFino 2024, as shared by their passionate creators.
Trademark Kawpeng: Bridging Craftsmanship and Contemporary Design
Matti Kawpeng, the architect behind Trademark Kawpeng, has built a reputation for his custom work in interior renovations and fit-outs. However, his creative ingenuity shines brightest when he transforms off-cut materials from his projects into stunning collections for events like ArteFino. This year, Matti presents a collection featuring marble, stone, and upholstery pieces, with the luxury cat trees made from fallen coffee trees in Batangas as the centerpiece. His work reflects a commitment to sustainability and advocacy for responsible use of materials.
Reflecting on the theme of KaPAMANA, Matti emphasizes the importance of passing on craftsmanship and contemporary knowledge to the next generation. “When people think about local handicrafts, they often picture traditional patterns, but I believe the Filipino contemporary designer should also be able to shine through,” he explains. Matti’s vision is to bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, ensuring to carry forward the skills and creativity of today’s artisans.
Likha + Mundo: Elevating the Filipino Artisan
Likha + Mundo, founded by Iiko Asuque and Janica Rina, is a brand born from a deep love for Filipino craftsmanship and a desire to support local artisans. The brand started as a response to a gap in the market for unique, well-crafted home items, and it quickly grew into a platform for social change. Likha + Mundo’s mission is to bring an elevated aesthetic to Filipino homes while providing sustainable livelihoods for artisans who might otherwise abandon their craft.
Likha + Mundo partners with local artisans like Nanay Crecencia to create unique pieces for homes.
For ArteFino 2024, Likha + Mundo’s collection draws inspiration from biophilia, or the love of nature. Iiko highlights a particularly meaningful collaboration with Nanay Crescencia, a 94-year-old traditional potter from Batangas. “We wanted to support her by featuring her work, even the broken and discarded pieces,” Iiko shares. The collection embodies KaPAMANA by preserving traditional craftsmanship and transforming it into heirloom pieces. Each piece is not only a tribute to Filipino heritage but also a step toward sustaining the legacy of artisans like Nanay Crescencia.
Casa Juan: A Taste of Filipino Heritage
Casa Juan, founded by Michelle Asence Fontelera during the pandemic, is a brand dedicated to bringing a touch of the Philippines into every home through its beautifully designed plates. This year, Casa Juan celebrates Filipino heritage with its new Batang Pinoy series, which captures the nostalgia of childhood memories like reading comics at the sari-sari store and climbing aratilis trees. “These are experiences that don’t happen anymore, especially with today’s technology-driven childhoods,” Michelle laments.
Casa Juan takes inspiration from Filipino values and heritage for their collections of tableware.
In line with ArteFino’s theme of KaPAMANA, Casa Juan’s collection also features heritage dishes created in collaboration with Chef Reggie Aspiras. The brand’s mission is clear: to pass on the rich cultural traditions and culinary heritage of the Philippines, one plate at a time. Through its designs, Casa Juan preserves the stories, flavors, and traditions that define Filipino culture.
