ORTHO House in Japan is a Monolithic Structure Built on an Uneven Plot
ORTHO is a residence in the suburbs of the Kantō region of Japan that features two board-formed concrete volumes exterior. The plot’s irregular shape heavily influenced the design of this modern house. Apollo Architectures & Associates made sure to utilize the property’s distinctive shape and topography.
Residents can access the interior of this monolithic structure through its four-car subterranean garage. It is retracted from the main road to use the space’s offset elevation effectively. Upon entering the garage, residents can either use an elevator or stairs to the main level.
The interior highlights floor-to-ceiling glazing that connects to a courtyard and large garden terrace located on the south side. Each room, including the master bedroom and laundry room, expands to these areas, allowing residents to enjoy outdoor leisure without compromising their privacy. This modern house’s access to the garden area also lets the inhabitants maximize their exposure to natural light.
Moreover, the facade of the residence is reflected in its interior through the use of exposed concrete and muted tones. The addition of a coffered ceiling with wood inserts, however, provides the living spaces with subtle warmth.
