DIY project that Cy Yñares accomplished slowly and in parts. Almost everything—from painting the walls,to installing the lights , and picking out and arranging the furniture—is Cy’s labor of love. He also got input from friends, whom he likes to entertain at home. “I host dinner parties… usually intimate ones, with around six to seven people,” says Cy, although he once had more than 20 guests over. condoliving cy ynares the bald baker diy mancave loft condo bgc One of the few areas of the home that Cy hired professional help for is the renovated and expanded kitchen, which welcomes guests upon entry to the unit. “I cook a lot, for myself and for friends,” explains Cy. Not to mention, his bakery business, The Bald Baker, requires a larger and more complete kitchen than what the condominium developer provided upon turnover. Because of the open floor plan, it was a must for the kitchen area to match the rest of the unit. The wall tiles were changed, and the cabinets and counters were revamped to keep in theme with the rest of the loft.

The dining area is versatile, serving also as a great brunch and merienda area, as well as a workspace. Photos taken by Cy are framed above the table. The customized wall cushion extends from the built in bench to the ceiling, lending to the casual, comfy vibe to the dining area. condoliving cy ynares the bald baker diy mancave loft condo bgc At the far end of the unit under a high ceiling and overlooking from the bedroom loft is the living room. “This is where I unwind,” Cy says of his favorite spot. Along with a good book, an episode of Top Chef or a game on his PlayStation, the living area is where he spends most of his time. Cy’s personality comes through in this space: his favorite Papa Bear armchair from Space Encounters sits in the corner, cookbooks and eccentric travel finds stand out against the calming canvases of gray. condoliving cy ynares the bald baker diy mancave loft condo bgc condoliving cy ynares the bald baker diy mancave loft condo bgc Upstairs is the bedroom, accessed by a customized staircase adjacent to the entrance. Like the rest of the place, it is dotted with personal touches and memorabilia that keep it interesting. The bed, which faces the window, overlooks the Burgos Circle neighborhood and bustling business district beyond. He also positioned his office table next to the window for the view. He occasionally likes working on the bed. With a view that can’t be beat, Cy Yñares feels right at home in a space he fashioned himself.

For inspiration, he drew ideas from magazines, blogs, and the likes of Tom Dixon and Budji Layug. Describing himself as a little bit OC, Cy opted for a mostly open storage system that helps him keep his things in order, and has also proven more efficient than traditional cabinets. The open closet makes it easier for Cy to pick out clothes without making a mess. Shoes are stored neatly in clear boxes while shirts are folded in wire bins. Cy plans on converting the rest of his cabinets in the near future. condoliving cy ynares the bald baker diy mancave loft condo bgc Though he chose not to hire an interior designer because he found it pricey, he had a lot of fun creating his place from scratch, painting mishaps included. Cy Yñares says, if you look at the walls and corners close enough, you’ll find that “everything is uneven.” He had to position and re-position the furniture to hide the more serious flaws. It also took him some time to get the right flow of the spaces, to the point where he was rearranging furniture every month! And chances are, nothing is staying put. Cy says his little space will continue to evolve. The one thing that’s staying is the color gray. This story first appeared on CondoLiving Vol. 9.4 2014.
