Once again, Filipino ingenuity was at the forefront of the recently concluded American Standard Design Awards (ASDA) 2022 with the theme Purposeful Design—Transforming the Way We Live. LIXIL, the makers of water and housing products, announced the national winners of the design competition.

The competition allowed Year 2 (and above) tertiary students to craft designs that can improve everyday living while contributing to the sustainability of our society. ASDA encouraged students to showcase their distinctive bathroom designs from participating countries Cambodia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Australia, and New Zealand.

“Purposeful design as a theme elevated the entire competition,” says Hermie Limbo, Head of LIXIL Water Technology Philippines. He also adds that ASDA 2022 was about designing for the times we live in. It’s a challenge that designers must face beyond the new normal. “They’re so appropriate for the changing world. An up for the new normal and beyond indeed,” says Limbo.

A win for the future of design in the Philippines

The competition had two categories centered on daily consumer issues and the emerging lifestyle trends beyond the pandemic. The chosen 12 student-finalists presented their concepts to a panel of thought leaders known in the local architecture and interior design industry. The judges included Jojo Tolentino, President and CEO of AIDEA, Inc.; Chat Fores, Founder-Partner of Chat Fores Interior Design Studio; Ivy Almario, President of Atelier Almario; Joralyn Soriano-Ong, Leader in Sales & Marketing of LIXIL Water Technology APAC; and Judith Torres, Editor-at-large of Kanto.com.ph.
