Pagsibol. In its English translation, it means “To bloom”. Recently, this concept fueled the beauty of the concert led by Filipina composer and multi-instrumentalist, Anya Lagman. The elegant Pagsibol concerto was held at the historic Goldenberg Mansion in Malacañang.
Alongside the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Madrigal Singers, Anya Lagman presented a cultural music show featuring a wide genre of music. From film scores composed by Lagmans herself, hit OPM songs of the past and present, and ballad pop songs to choral music and string quartets. But how exactly did the Goldenberg’s first musical culture show come to fruition?
A Celebration of Talent
The Goldenberg Mansion is a venue with a historic reputation. Back in 1899, it was the past home and headquarters of General Arthur Macarthur. Now, it houses the Presidential Museum. Through this, the public learns more about past presidents and the accomplishments they’ve contributed. The structure is one of the country’s beacons of architectural beauty. Even more so after its recent and extensive rehabilitation under National Artist for Architecture, Leandro Lacson.
Naturally, some of the most culturally invigorating events happen here. For example, one of the most recent ones is Pagsibol. It is an event inspired by the European tradition of salon music. This is where artists and composers perform in living rooms or in an intimate space. Pagsibol is a mirror of that tradition. It also combines Mike Lagman’s well-thought-of theme centering around the phrase ‘to bloom’ and Charmaine Lagman’s creative direction.
“My husband and I played crucial roles in organizing the “Pagsibol” recital.” Charmaine Lagman says, “While my husband contributed to the event’s theme, which beautifully encapsulated our daughter’s journey as a composer, I took the lead in orchestrating the production. This marked my inaugural experience in event coordination, made possible through the invaluable contributions of dedicated teams.”
Creating The Space to Bloom
The Goldenberg Musical Culture Show Series highlighted the Filipino’s musical ability and how it can inspire hearts worldwide. Of course, several other hands alongside the Lagmans brought it to life.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to those who played integral roles in ensuring the success of “Pagsibol.” Patrick Rosas and his team, along with the Social Secretary of Malacañang, led by Bianca Zobel and Dina Tantoco, alongside Vivian Recio, were instrumental in bringing the event to life. The efforts of Robby Carmona and his team, particularly Moppet Aquino, were invaluable. Chef Florabel and her team added a delightful culinary dimension. Notably, the unwavering support of our First Lady, Liza Marcos, provided a significant boost to the event’s achievements.”
Moreover, Pagsibol is indeed a gracefully devised event. But the Lagmans are actually professionals more involved in the construction industry. For the past two decades, the family has co-owned and managed a successful AAA construction company called MCGP Construction Company. From convention centers completed within a swift 10-months to mid-rise buildings to hotels completed within six-months, the Lagman’s business is one that hinges on nurturing talent and helping people bloom into the lives they want to live.
Charmaine Lagman is also a natural leader. Aside from co-heading the company, she’s also been the lead in ICNS (Interpoint Consultancy Network Systems Inc.). ICNS is an IT company specializing in creating systems for Local Government Units. She’s also a hands-on mother and married for 27 years, reflecting commitment and devotion to her husband and family. Beyond these roles, she remains committed to her passions from college. If she isn’t playing golf or cooking for friends and family, she plays the drums and piano–a passion passed down to her children.

“Music has been an integral part of the Lagman household for generations.” Lagman says, “I have always been musically inclined, playing piano and drums. While I would have explored other instruments, my focus remained on these two. However, the musical inclination extends to all four of my children, each of whom has mastered 3 to 4 instruments. During their younger years, Elijah, my son, took charge of maintaining discipline and practice schedules.”
Lastly, the Lagman home became one filled with recording systems perfect for professionals. Because they created a space that caters to creativity, their family has become synonymous with graceful growth.
