After the success of the cleaning and restoration of the Rizal Monument last December, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) partnered with Kärcher again. This time, NHCP tapped the cleaning firm for the restoration of another historical and cultural landmark in the Philippines: the People Power Monument.

The People Power Monument two decades ago

Located at the corner of EDSA and White Plains Avenue in Quezon City, the People Power Monument is a sculpture designed by Eduardo Castrillo in 1993. Castrillo was an awardee of Republic Cultural Heritage and The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM), having received the latter at the age of 29. He was also considered an avant-garde sculptor in the 1970s.

The monument created by Castrillo was designed to commemorate the 1986 People Power Revolution. It became open to the public in 1993.

Cleaning and restoration in the 2000s

In time for the People Power Revolution’s 32nd anniversary happening on February 25, the NHCP and Kärcher started their second restorative cleaning project (also a part of Kärcher’s ongoing cleaning initiative to restore national historical landmarks all over the world) last Monday, 12 February 2018.

Zurich Fernandez, Country General Manager of Kärcher Philippines says, “We at Kärcher are deeply honored once again to work together with the NHCP in this project. Standing as a symbol of hope and beacon of freedom, the People Power Monument is one of the most enduring legacies of the Filipino spirit, showing how in the midst of turbulence and conflict, a whole nation can become one. We assure everyone that we will help NHCP in any way to provide the utmost of care to the monument.”

Similar to the Rizal Monument restoration, the cleaning professionals of Kärcher are using the company’s steam cleaning machines to remove the dirt and pollution that the memorial incurred throughout the years. The cleaning and restoration is set to be completed by Thursday, 15 February.
