LOEWE Collaborates with Artisan Brand Sotheby’s highlighting craftsmanship.

LOEWE is a Spanish brand that commits to exploring new sustainable practices for everything including material sourcing, designing, manufacturing, packaging, and even the building and management of its stores. Together with Sotheby’s—one of the world’s largest brokers and auction houses, LOEWE has created the new Weaves collection—a collection of innovatively designed roasters and artisanal accessories that include bags, baskets, and other accessories.

This collection mostly spotlights the chestnut roaster from Galicia—a handmade clay pot punched in with multiple holes. Aside from allowing functionality, these punched holes allow for creativity to seep through with the insertion of different weaving techniques. Along with the Galicia chestnut roaster, Sotheby’s is exhibiting a collection of seven artist-decorated chestnut roasters that feature unique weaving techniques. The artists featured in this collection come from all over the world and include Japan’s Arko, Min Chen of China, and Laia Arqueros from Spain. The clay pots themselves meanwhile were handmade by master potter Antonio Pereira and were reinterpreted by three other artists. Altogether, the clay pots will be displayed alongside Sotheby’s marquee May auctions of Impressionist, Modern, and Contemporary art in New York.

84 other chestnut roasters accompany these pieces and were given to Spanish artisans Idoia Cuesta and Belen Martinez, and other artisans from LOEWE’s own ateliers who experimented with the roasters’ designs by embellishing them with different textiles that range from fabrics, ribbons, ropes, wool, leather, and even feathers, and straws.

“Many of the materials embellishing the roasters are, in fact, surplus from past LOEWE collections,” Creative Director, Jonathan Anderson says, highlighting the brand’s direction towards sustainable materials while turning them into unique and artistically eccentric works of traditional art in the most unexpected ways.

“Across this whole project, what I hope comes through is the liveliness and expansiveness of contemporary craft, as well as its playfulness,” Anderson explains. “I am proud we have created singular objects that rewire function through decoration and the other way around.”

The LOEWE Weaves Collection will be available at LOEWE stores and through its website from May 27, 2021.
