Subtle Sophistication Cloaks The Enigma House In Mexico

In Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico stands an introverted house defined with warm creamy tones and soft surfaces. Mexican architectural firm, MEM Arquitectos, built the 180-square meter residence with a facade that sets the tone for the entire property. The architects organized the choice of materials and calm colors to moderate the rigorous geometry of the structure. The goal for Enigma House was to create a straightforward and ethical architecture with a harmonious blend of gray, white, and wood.

The clean cream-toned wall facade is spruced up by the wooden main door and soft gray quarry accent. A two-car open garage precedes the entrance, embellished with plants along its perimeter wall. On the outside, the house seems introspective, but the interiors are enhanced with wide halls and spaces.

The site’s trapezoidal orientation posed an opportunity to create a central garden. A small courtyard in the middle of the layout cuts through the upper and ground level inviting organic light to envelop the structure’s interior spaces. It expands the communal areas while detaching them from the private ones. Moreover, its three-dimensional nature makes it a visual element, adding to the house’s aesthetic.

The ground floor contains a dynamic area that can be used as an office, bedroom, or game room. This space’s cross ventilation and natural light source come from the central garden. One can reach the upper floor holding the private areas and two bedrooms, through a concrete staircase. All rooms are oriented toward the views of the central garden while maintaining privacy.

Ultimately, the Enigma house’s interiors are soft, warm, and gently marries the plants. This Mexican home inspires those who yearn for sophistication in simplicity.
