It’s uncommon to encounter a project where one person plays the role of client, designer, and builder. But artist Andie Lasco is an exception to the rule. In December of 2021, Andie opened Hatch + Hoolman, an art and design studio, cafe, and shop.

“Hatch” and “Hoolman”

Andie explains that ‘Hatch’ comes from the word hatchery, defined as a place of hatching, a place where ideas are formed. While ‘Hoolman’ is derived from the Tagalog word hulmahan or hulma, meaning ‘to mold’ or form with your hands. The studio aims to create, curate, collect and sell unique pieces for those who have the same enthusiasm for art and design.

Constructed for four months, Andie designed the studio with the assistance of their mother, who is a contractor. For them, design is always a very intuitive process; it feels second nature, and they know when it’s right. Some of the materials they used to construct the studio are excesses from their past projects. Intrinsically involved in every step of the process was Andie, from the arts, design, and build to the final styling and decorative touches inside the studio. Due to the studio’s launch set scheduled, they had to rush the construction of the studio.

“The main reason for the studio’s design is for it to be as straightforward as possible. As a ceramic artist and a designer, I wanted the light to enter the room as much as possible, hence, the glass windows and the high ceiling”

The Studio

This minimalist industrial-style structure proudly announces itself right from Villamor Street’s corner inside AFPOVAI in Taguig. Moreover, wooden and rustic seating areas in front provide a remarkable contrast to the studio’s modern glass and steel facade. Andie incorporated these along with wood and raw cement into the studio’s overall look. Combined, these elements can help achieve a relaxed, homey, and inviting aesthetic. Painted over with a unique shade of white is the red brick accent wall. This detail showcases the craftsmanship and gives a warm presence to soften the studio’s hard edges and straight lines. Going up the loft, where one can witness spectacular sunsets, are more seating areas. Isamu Noguchi-inspired lamps, vintage and modern pieces of furniture, art pieces as well as some exciting reads add a punch of personality to the space.

Other than Andie’s beautifully crafted ceramics and works of art, you can also purchase among the well-curated selection of furniture, tableware, and home decor Andie and their mother have sourced locally and abroad. Hatch + Hoolman is also a permanent stockist of the local brand, Someasian. Known for their relaxed clothing driven by perpetual intuition, Someasian, an up-and-coming brand always aim to tell a story.

Located at Villamor St, AFPOVAI, Taguig, Metro Manila, Hatch + Hoolman opens Tuesdays to Saturdays from 11 AM-10 PM and 9 AM to 5 PM on Sundays.
