Every year often brings the exciting prospect of a fresh start, and for many, that means moving into their very first apartment. While the anticipation is thrilling, the reality of setting up a new home can feel overwhelming, especially when faced with a blank canvas. So, we’ve curated a practical apartment starter kit to provide you with the essentials from the moment you unpack.

1) A Comfortable Bed

Your bed is often your personal sanctuary, a place where you can relax and unwind. But how can you achieve that needed rest when you don’t have a proper sleeping space in your new place? This is why a comfortable bed and mattress are arguably the most important components of your first apartment starter kit.

Unlike other items that can be acquired gradually, having bedroom essentials helps you feel more settled. It allows you to recharge after the tiring process of moving, making it easier to tackle other tasks related to setting up your space. Additionally, it provides a sense of security and comfort in a new and unfamiliar environment.

Start by investing in a good mattress. Consider the size appropriate for your needs, sleeping preferences, and bedroom space. A full or queen is often a good choice. But for limited spaces, opt for a twin. 

Next is the bed frame. Although you can technically put a mattress directly on the floor, wouldn’t it be better to give it better support? Aside from preventing the mattress from sagging and building up moisture, it also makes the bed look more put together. 

Finally, add a soft and comfortable bedsheet, at least two pillows, and a blanket to guarantee a comfy and cozy sleep setup.

2) Basic Furniture

Once you have a comfortable place to sleep, basic furniture makes your first apartment feel more like a home. These essential items enable you to perform your daily activities with ease, adding comfort, convenience, and much-needed organization. 

Aside from creating a sense of normalcy in a new environment, they help define specific areas in your new place. With this, you feel more in control of your space since you know where to eat, sit, work, entertain guests, and store your belongings. 

Without these things in your apartment starter kit, you might resort to using makeshift solutions that could be unsafe, such as stacking boxes as tables or sitting on unstable surfaces.

Tackle the living room first. Prioritize seating furniture like a sofa or couch if you have space and want to host guests or lounge comfortably. Loveseats or armchairs are more suitable for smaller apartments. Coffee and side tables are optional but add a finishing touch to the living room and provide convenient surfaces for drinks, snacks, and other items, especially if you don’t have a dining table.

For the dining area, you can start with space-saving types like round, nesting, and drop-leaf tables if you’re short on space. If the space and budget allows, then you can upgrade to a standard rectangular four to six-seater table. 

The bedroom additionally needs a dresser or chest of drawers for storing clothes. Meanwhile, the bathroom should have storage solutions such as a free standing cabinet or wall mounted shelves and caddies to save floor space.

3) Kitchenware

With a comfortable place to sleep and a functional living space settled, the next essential step is setting up your kitchen. While takeout and convenience foods might suffice for the first few days, kitchenware quickly becomes crucial for a healthier and more budget-friendly lifestyle in your first apartment. 

By having the kitchen  tools in your apartment starter kit, you create a sustainable foundation for independent living. 

First, choose good cookware. A large frying pan, medium-sized saucepan or pot, and rice cooker are a great starting points to cook most of the dishes you want. You’ll also need at least one kitchen knife, a ladle, spatula, and a mixing bowl. Add a peeler, can opener, and cutting board (preferably wood) to complete your meal prep.

For tableware, invest in a set of two to four plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, and cutlery (forks, spoons, and knives) for yourself and a few guests. 

4) Window Treatments

Don’t underestimate the importance of window treatments when moving into your first apartment. They might seem like a mere afterthought for your apartment starter kit, but they’re far more crucial than you think.

From the bright morning sun to the humid afternoons, they help regulate light and temperature in your living space by blocking direct sunlight and heat. This is particularly beneficial during hot summers to improve energy efficiency and lower electricity costs. Plus, they can keep you safe from prying eyes, especially at night if your place is on the ground floor or in a particularly dense area.

You can choose from a variety of types and styles depending on your needs. Curtains, drapes, and sheers offer soft diffusion to near-total blackout degrees of light control. Meanwhile shutters, shades, and blinds are for more precise light and temperature regulation and enhanced privacy.

5) Cleaning Supplies

Now that you’ve got the core essentials when moving to your new apartment, it’s time to think about maintaining them. Including cleaning supplies in your apartment starter kit is equivalent to investing in the longevity and well-being of your new home upfront.

The moving process itself is often already messy. So, cleaning supplies are crucial from day one. In addition, these tools can safeguard  your furniture, belongings, and even the apartment itself from damage caused by dust, dirt, spills, and mold.

As they keep your place tidy, these indispensable items ensure you have a safe, healthy, and inviting living environment. 

Basic minimum cleaning supplies include an all-purpose cleaning spray, sponges, cleaning cloths, broom, dustpan, bucket, and mop. These are dedicated to all areas and surfaces in your space. Allot separate cleaning tools and trash bins for kitchen and bathroom. Additionally, bring paper towels and rags for quick cleanups. 

Although vacuum cleaners, glass cleaners, and furniture polish are also useful, the aforementioned core supplies are the most important when you first move in.
