Made for The Weekend: The Design of This Family Home Creates A Sense of Calmness

This residence in India is designed to make the weekends of the residents relaxing and fun, hence the name: “A Weekend House in The Meadows”. Designed by SAK Designs, the family home welcomes occupants and guests with an elegant blue door which stands out against the white exterior walls. 

Entering the blue door already brings people into a cheerful mood. But everyone will fall in love with the house’s courtyard–the heart of the house. The surrounding walls invoke the feeling of freedom to be one’s own self. 

The courtyard is oval in shape and centralized stone-paved. It features an off-centered tree that allows residents to enjoy their morning cup of tea and evening chats in the courtyard. The environment also invites seasonal birds from the surrounding farmland to keep them company.

Like other family homes, the design of this residence is meant to provide the family of the client with a space to create memories together. The northeast of the courtyard engulfs the living room with large openings. “This simple, minimalist space acts as a canvas; for all the memories, the family and friends are going to render every time they visit this place,” the architect explains. 

The southwest part of the house is where the kitchen and dining areas are located. They stretch themselves to the secluded lawn. The architect suggested that this inclusive space could be a perfect spot for fine outdoor dining. 

Moreover, the northwest to southeast axis gives residents a beautiful thread of blue and green skyline with varying visuals. From entrance walkways to a semi-covered deck, it takes one to a vast field which offers solace in the moment of sensory delight. 

The southside, meanwhile, has white cube sleeping pods with an enchanting exposure to varying scapes. A simple staircase connects the room and provides access to the slab above that holds a large communal terrace space. “Such a liveable zone with a cool breeze and a serene view intends to make us a part of nature’s intimate conversation at night,” the architect says.

The 2200 square meter residence is a gateway in the outskirts of Ahmedabad with its simple division of spaces surrounding the central courtyard with free-flowing walkways, the random ounctures on the walls, and the curved edges. It also offers a stunning view without a solid compound wall obstructing it. 

Weekends are usually spent to rest and relax after a week of working and school. The house’s blue-hued doors and white painted windows create a sense of calmness. The natural stone and the rough texture with earthy aesthetic spread over the built-in furniture blend smoothly with the surroundings.

“Overall, the house is designed as a space and a place to celebrate our life. We want the younger generation to come together and play, chat, and enjoy their life in its simplest form,” states the principal architect of SAK Designs.
