Since its founding in 1683, Gaggenau has established itself as a cutting-edge leader in technology and design. With new refrigeration models, the brand continues its evolution of the Vario cooling Expressive series. The series is intended to offer a modular approach to contemporary kitchen architecture. As such, it revolutionizes the home kitchen by reinforcing its concept for cooling as an integral aspect of purposeful kitchen and interior design.

With proportions and detailing that recall fine furniture, the cooling appliances are conceived as architectural elements within the space.

Designing with Purpose

New models were developed for the series, including refrigerators, freezers, fridge-freezers, and wine climate cabinets. Sven Baacke, Gaggenau Head of Design, described the latest additions to the series as “architectural in form, exacting in function.” Each appliance was designed to be installed either separately or in side-by-side coordinated alignment. Features such as handless doors, flush surfaces, and precisely structured allow for visual continuity.

Glare-free, warm white, LED lighting activates gradually and evenly in response to use, providing clear visibility without distraction.

Designed as architectural elements within the space, the appliances have a furniture-like appearance. Internally, the material palette is constrained and restrained: the dark brushed stainless steel, the anthracite aluminum and glass; and glare-free, warm white, LED lighting activities. These elements craft a coherent interior while providing clear visibility without distraction, in a way that is intuitive to users.

Latest Cooling Innovations

Mikkel Brandt Bugge, Industrial Designer, states: “Our goal was to create a calm, coherent experience where function and materiality work quietly together. The flexibility of the system allows for truly personal configurations, whether through individual appliances or through the creation of a dedicated cooling ensemble.”

Dedicated programmes with bespoke humidity and tempreture control ensure the ingredients retain their essence.

This is best presented in the performance features available in the series, which are designed for precision and longevity. Elements such as a professional freshness system ensure stable temperature and humidity conditions. Meanwhile, selected models include integrated cameras. To enable remote access and visibility, each appliance is compatible with Gaggenau Home Connect. With animated quick guides to support maintenance and everyday use, its interfaces are clear and intuitive.

Furthemore, the series includes one of the brand’s most advanced cooling innovations to date: wine climate cabinets with automatic tempering programmes. This development redefines wine serving and storage for the home. Designed in the same fashion as the other appliances of the series, it blends seamlessly into the surrounding architecture. The new wine cabinets are slated for release in mid-2026 for the Asia-Pacific markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Vario series is engineered for total modularity, meaning refrigerators, freezers, and wine climate cabinets can be installed as standalone units or in a “coordinated alignment” (side-by-side). This allows designers to create a custom cooling ensemble that fits the specific spatial requirements of the home. By using handleless doors and flush surfaces, these appliances are technically treated as architectural partitions or fine furniture rather than traditional bulky hardware.

This system is a high-precision climate control engine designed for ingredient longevity. It utilizes dedicated sensors and automated programs to maintain stable temperature and bespoke humidity zones. By preventing the fluctuations typical in standard refrigerators, the system ensures that sensitive ingredients retain their “essence” (nutritional value and texture) for significantly longer periods, mimicking commercial-grade preservation technology.

The latest innovation in the series is the automatic tempering program within the wine climate cabinets. Unlike standard wine fridges that keep a static temperature, these cabinets are engineered to bring specific wine types to their ideal serving temperature automatically. This involves precise thermal management across multiple zones, allowing for the simultaneous storage of aging reds and the chilled serving of whites within the same architectural unit.

Gaggenau has moved away from plastic-heavy interiors to a high-durability, premium material palette. The interiors feature dark brushed stainless steel, anthracite aluminum, and solid glass. This choice is not just aesthetic; these materials have superior thermal mass, helping to maintain cold temperatures more efficiently. The lighting is equally calibrated: glare-free, warm white LEDs that activate gradually to provide visibility without visual distraction or “light shock.”

The Expressive series is a fully “smart” ecosystem. Selected models include integrated internal cameras, allowing users to check inventory via a smartphone while away from the kitchen. Technically, the Home Connect interface also provides animated quick guides for maintenance and real-time alerts regarding temperature drops or door status, ensuring the structural integrity of the cooling environment is maintained remotely.

Five Bathroom Design Trends Shaping the Way We Live Today

Once defined primarily by function, the bathroom is now becoming a space that reflects personal lifestyles. As broader design aspirations change in response, so do expectations of the products that shape these spaces. From customizable fixtures to touchless technologies, today’s bathroom solutions are increasingly designed around the way people live. COTTO’s KLIRR Collection highlights several […]

The Quiet Power of Everyday Details

Many people only notice good design when it is absent. A faucet that splashes too far, feels awkward in the hand, or sits slightly out of alignment can disrupt a routine in ways that are subtle yet persistent. These are small irritations, but they reveal a larger truth: the objects used every day often have […]

Art Deco: Modernity and Design at the National Museum

Running from November 27, 2025, to May 31, 2026, the exhibition traces how Art Deco moved from global design movement to localized expression through Philippine architecture, furnishings, fashion, and everyday life. The National Museum of Fine Arts’ Art Deco: Modernity and Design in the Philippines 1925-1950 explored the history of the Art Deco style in […]

How Large-Format Tiles Create Seamless and Luxurious Interiors

Flooring can profoundly influence how a space is experienced. Long before furniture and finishes are introduced, the floor establishes a visual field that shapes movement, light, and proportion. This is where large-format tiles are particularly effective. By reducing the number of grout lines across a floor or wall, they create a more continuous surface. The […]
