This guide will reveal the tricky home decor to clean, along with easy cleaning hacks to keep your space sparkling!

Keep Chandeliers Sparkly

Chandeliers are the crown jewels of a room, adding elegance and a touch of glamor. But those dazzling crystals have a dark secret—they’re notorious dust magnets.

Due to the crystals’ natural positive electrostatic charge, they draw negatively charged dust particles. This attraction makes dust cling stubbornly to the crystals, creating a visible film that dulls their sparkle. On top of that, the complex shapes of a chandelier make it difficult for dust to simply fall off. Not to mention their usual position near air vents or ceiling fans, which creates air currents that stir up dust particles.

Due to their high placement and intricate details, chandeliers are susceptible to damage from harsh chemicals or rough cleaning methods. So, they need a lighter and careful cleaning hack.

Begin by turning off the power and, if possible, remove the lightbulbs too. Cover the floor with a drop cloth to catch falling dust. Then, use a microfiber cloth to gently wipe down the frame and larger crystals. For tighter spaces, try a soft paintbrush or a vacuum cleaner on low suction with a soft brush attachment. Meanwhile, heavily soiled crystals require a diluted vinegar solution and a microfiber cloth, followed by thorough drying.

Air Out Woven Items

Woven items, on their own, are already a tricky home decor due to their texture and artistry. But with dust and grime caked on, it’s a downright grueling cleaning task.

From baskets, throws, furniture, and wall hangings, all have complex designs and tightly woven materials. This creates a labyrinth of tiny crevices where dust particles easily get trapped. Unlike smooth surfaces, woven items can’t be cleaned with just a swipe of cloth.

Instead, the easiest way to remove loose dust and debris is by shaking them out. Take your woven items outside and give them a good shake. But be mindful of gusts that could carry dust back indoors.

You can also use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to reach deep into the weave and remove embedded dust particles. This is particularly effective for baskets and wall hangings.

But if you want a deeper cleaning hack without damaging the material, baking soda perfectly does the job. Sprinkle it inside baskets and let it sit for 30 minutes. This natural cleaning agent absorbs odors and loosens dust particles, making them easier to vacuum up.

Revive Shag Rugs

Shag rugs’ deep, plush pile feels amazing underfoot. But they’re tricky to clean. Compared to flat rugs, the long fibers of a shag rug create a massive surface area. This translates to more nooks and crannies for dust particles, pet hair, and allergens to settle and hide.

In addition, every time you walk across your shag rug, you essentially stir up the dust and debris that’s settled deep within the pile. This constant agitation keeps dust particles airborne for a while before they settle back down, making them more likely to be inhaled.

This means that the first step to maintaining them is to keep them away from high foot traffic areas. Place doormats near entrances to trap dirt before it gets tracked onto the shag. You can also consider placing furniture strategically to avoid high-traffic areas on the rug.

Make sure to vacuum your shag rug at least two to three times a week, using the beater bar attachment to loosen dirt and debris from the base of the fibers. But be gentle because excessive use of the beater bar can damage the delicate fibers.

And similar to woven items, baking soda also serves as a natural deodorizer and can help absorb dust particles. Sprinkle baking soda on the rug, leave it for 30 minutes, then thoroughly vacuum it up.

There’s no denying that indoor plants add a pop of life to any space. However, their lush foliage can also become a magnet for dust and even attract unwanted pests.

These tricky decors release water vapor through their leaves in a process called transpiration. While this is crucial for plant health, it also creates a slightly sticky surface on the leaves, further attracting dust particles.

While dust is an aesthetic concern, dusty soil can also lead to a bigger problem – pests. Dust mites and fungus gnats thrive in moist environments, and the decomposing organic matter in potting soil can attract them. Additionally, dusty leaves are a breeding ground for spider mites; tiny insects that suck the sap from plants and cause damage.

And since they’re sensitive to harsh chemicals, they need a milder and intricate cleaning method. Regularly wipe down large, sturdy leaves with a damp microfiber cloth to remove settled dust. For plants with fuzzy or velvety leaves, a gentle misting with water can dislodge dust without harming the delicate surface.

Over time, dust can accumulate on the soil’s surface, creating an unsightly layer. To tackle this, remove the plant from its pot and carefully rinse the roots with lukewarm water to wash away the dust. Repot with fresh potting mix to ensure proper drainage and aeration.

As for pest infestation like spider mites, look for webbing on the undersides of leaves and a stippled yellowing on the leaf surface. Apply an insecticidal soap solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This organic method is effective against spider mites without harming your plant.

Polish Your Knick-Knacks

Those little decorative treasures, while adding personality and charm to your space, can become dust bunnies’ favorite hiding spots as well.

These home decor becomes trickier to clean because of the materials they’re made of and their placement.

Ceramics, some types of wood, and even fabric figurines have a slightly porous surface. Dust can become trapped within these tiny pores, making it harder to remove with just a swipe. Meanwhile, many knick-knacks, especially those made of plastic or metal, can develop a static charge. This static attracts dust particles like a magnet, making them even more prone to collecting dust.

Since they’re often displayed on shelves, mantels, and tabletops, they’re typically exposed to air circulation and everyday activities.

For effective and efficient cleaning, group them according to their materials. For ceramics and glass, use a damp cloth with a mild dish soap solution, followed by thorough drying.

Wood knick-knacks require a furniture polish specifically designed for wood. Avoid harsh chemicals like ammonia-based cleaners and solvents that can damage the finish.

As for metals, depending on the type, use a damp cloth with a mild cleaner or a metal polish. Remember to always test in an inconspicuous area first.
