The Evolution of Lladró: A Heritage of Innovation and Craftsmanship
At a recent exclusive media event held in Rustans Makati, Lladró showcased their latest collectibles, revealing the brand’s ongoing commitment to innovation and artistry. Roberto Marco Andreu, Lladró’s Sales Director for South Asia and Iberia, provided an insider’s look into the evolution of Lladró’s exquisite porcelain creations. Andreu guided us through the brand’s journey from traditional collections to its embrace of pop culture and contemporary design, highlighting Lladró’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of craftsmanship.
Capturing Movement and Realism
Lladró continually explores new techniques and materials to keep its offerings fresh and captivating. One of the brand’s distinguishing features is its ability to capture movement and realism in porcelain. Andreu notes, “It’s not just that you are working in porcelain, it’s to be able to make it look real… all this movement… it’s very, very complicated.”
This dedication to innovation includes using 4000 colors and finishes like golden luster and matte porcelain. That complexity is evident in their latest limited Batman figurine. Celebrating the superhero’s 85th anniversary, it marks Lladró’s first interpretation of the iconic character. The collaboration with Warner Bros-Discovery Global Consumer Products features a detailed depiction of Batman, capturing his persona as Gotham City’s protector.
Handcrafted in Lladró’s Valencia workshops, it showcases Batman in black matte porcelain with glazed and matte finishes, accented with golden luster. Limited to 500 units, the piece is designed by sculptor Eva Cuerva, known for her work in the Star Wars by Lladró collection. This Batman figure, complete with a dynamic pose and iconic costume details, appeals to both Batman fans and pop culture enthusiasts.
Lladró’s Star Wars Collection
The porcelain depiction of Stormtroopers, iconic characters from the Star Wars saga, faithfully captures the imperial soldiers in intricate detail. The pieces feature glazed white porcelain with black and grey accents. It includes a base with an identifying plaque, part of a limited edition of 1138. The number 1138 is a nod to George Lucas’s first feature film, “THX 1138.” This has been subtly referenced throughout the Star Wars universe as a tribute to Lucas’s contributions to science fiction cinema.
Lladró’s Star Wars line up also include Amidala, Ashoka, and Grogu. All possess the same intricate details that you would expect from the brand.
The Guest Collection: A Canvas for Artistic Expression
“The Guest” collection stands out for its collaborations with renowned. This ongoing project allows various artists to bring fresh perspectives, resulting in a diverse range of artworks. Each piece in the collection is a testament to the fusion of tradition and modern design.
“The Guest” is Lladró’s most captivating and versatile porcelain character. Andreu explains, “The Guest was developed by Jaime Hayon… every year, we have a collaboration with a different [artist], adding another point of view.”
Created by Hayon ten years ago, this series of work serves as a blank canvas for celebrated artists, such as Paul Smith, Tim Biskup, Devilrobots, Gary Baseman, and Rolito, to express diverse stories and styles. The Guest’s design, blending irreverence and distinction, has become a 21st-century icon. These collaborations demonstrate that tradition can embrace experimentation and contemporary concepts.
Hayon emphasizes the importance of understanding and preserving artisanship by integrating it with modern design, enhancing traditional techniques and contextualizing their value today. The intricate artisan process behind The Guest highlights the successful fusion of contemporary design and tradition.
Collaboration and Limited Editions
Lladró’s commitment to collaboration extends beyond “The Guest.” The brand works with artists and designers worldwide to create limited-edition pieces. Andreu reveals that a special team carefully evaluates potential collaborations, ensuring that each partnership brings something new to the table. Currently, Lladró is working with an English designer to launch the first feminine Guest figure in September. It further adds another layer to their rich collection.
Beyond figurines, Lladró broadened its product range to include jewelry, lighting, and functional decor. Andreu shares, “You can find the jewelry collections in porcelain… even the chandeliers, everything is with porcelain.” This showcases Lladró’s versatility and willingness to explore new avenues.
Lladró’s Heritage and Craftsmanship
Each Lladró piece involves a labor-intensive handcrafted process, presenting unique challenges. And despite its modern innovations, Lladró remains deeply rooted in its heritage. The brand continues to produce traditional fine porcelain pieces with a focus on detail and craftsmanship.
Andreu underscores this commitment, “We have 42 different kinds of formulas for porcelain… the porcelain for jewelry is not the same as for normal pieces.” This dedication to quality is a cornerstone of Lladró’s enduring appeal.
In fact, they have a long-standing presence in the Philippines, where its pieces are highly regarded. Andreu notes, “Philippines has always been welcoming… the religious pieces are very important here.” This cultural connection has fostered a loyal customer base in the region.
