PALA Holds I.P. Santos, Jr. Golf Cup for a Cause
Proceeds of the golf tournament will benefit landscape architecture students from four universities.

The Philippine Association of Landscape Architects (PALA) held the I.P. Santos, Jr. Golf Cup, a fund-raising golf tournament last Sept. 23 at Mount Malarayat Golf & Country Club in Batangas. The proceeds of this annual tournament—named after Ildefonso P. Santos, Jr., the Father of Philippine Landscape Architecture—will aid students who are taking up a Bachelors of Landscape Architecture at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Bulacan State University, University of San Carlos in Cebu, and University of San Agustin in Iloilo.
“Right now, there are only four schools offering the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program and we in PALA, we created this golf tournament so that we can help [qualified students] in various ways in support of their education,” said Norman Brito, president of PALA.
The kind of support that PALA gives to the students varies every year. “It’s dependent on the needs of the school,” Brito explained. “There was a time when we gave landscape architecture books to the libraries of the schools. Last year, we were able to send students to the World Congress in Turkey because of course, it’s not very usual for students to get invited to world-level conventions. So, it’s also a representation of the schools in the international platform.”
Fund-Raising, Recreation, and Networking Opportunity

Brito said PALA invited industry partners such as architects, contractors, engineers, and suppliers to participate in the golf tournament. Over a hundred participants registered for the event.
He added that the organization chose golf instead of other sports because “you have a lot of passive time. It’s not as strenuous as other sports. And it allows you to market and network to industry partners while being in the tournament itself.”
Other Activities and Projects
PALA also participated in the recently concluded Haligi ng Dangal Awards, a biannual event sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. The award recognizes architecture, landscape architecture, environmental planning, and interior design projects with exemplary design that also embodies the Filipino culture. One winner is chosen for each category.
PALA is also preparing for the upcoming sessions of PARKonversations, a series of seminars organized in partnership with the National Parks Development Committee, held at Rizal Park, Manila. These seminars are open to the public and are also streamed live on Facebook.
Brito said that most of PALA’s engagements nowadays are with government institutions to give back to the community and to educate more people about landscape architecture in the Philippines.
