Every year, the holiday season brings a flurry of new decor trends. While it’s fun to experiment with the latest styles, sometimes it can be a little taxing and confusing keeping up with them. But the good news is that you don’t need to follow every trend to create a stunning Yuletide aesthetic. Here are four classic Christmas themes you can always go back to for a timeless, festive, and nostalgic holiday home.

It’s hard to imagine Christmas without its (in)famous core colors—red and green. Given its long history deeply rooted in ancient traditions and beliefs, this palette holds significant symbolisms in various societies and cultures. So, it’s not surprising that this classic combination remains a beloved choice as a holiday theme. Canonically, it’s the default style that every homeowner can easily recognize and adopt.

Although any shade of red and green would generally look good together, homeware and furniture designer Susie Watson has a more elevated way of following this Christmas theme. Because these hues have been paired since the earlier times, they call for richer and deeper tones you’ll often see in period homes.

Instead of bright and orange-y reds, opt for berry shades like plum and cherry. As for greens, dark shades like emerald and pine perfectly exude a cozy traditional Christmas atmosphere. Watson additionally stated that these colors would look better when used in cushions and various fabrics like velvet, silk, linen, and wool.

A Christmas theme involving natural elements allows this festive season to be celebrated in a very organic and authentic manner. It’s one effective way to build a cozy and timeless interior style while embracing nature and sustainability.

Rather than trendy, single-use synthetic decor, fresh greenery takes center stage. This could be anything from foraged branches to potted plants and fresh wreaths. Aside from being readily available and biodegradable, these materials could also encourage DIY projects for more unique and personalized decorations.

Along with foliage, you can also layer stone and wood elements like vases, lanterns, and Christmas tree ornaments. But for a warmer and more inviting setup, try incorporating natural scents too. Interior designer Lauren Gilberthorpe shares dried oranges and star anise as her usual additions to her folksy holiday decor.

During the most wonderful time of the year, adding a dash of glitz and glamour continues to be a popular choice in decorating homes. This is a great way to achieve a luxurious and glamorous aesthetic, while still maintaining the presence of traditional Christmas decor. In addition, its sparkly and reflective qualities blend well with different palettes, ranging from deep shades to soft pastels and neutrals. You could say that this is the type of embellishment that makes every interior detail extra special.

A shiny metallic Christmas theme always starts with its base colors—gold, silver, bronze, and brass. Then, you can decide whether it will be in the form of a clean, glass, glittered, or beaded finish. The good thing here is that it can instantly elevate your interior style even if applied in dainty or generous amounts.

According to White Company Creative Director Mark Winstanley, these metallic details exude similar allure as mirrored adornments and layers of candles.

Of course, the wintery atmosphere is among the classic themes that many people immediately think of as Christmas. This is the interior getup perfectly mirroring the image and vibe of the North Pole and landscapes covered in a blanket of snow. Think of it as bringing a winter wonderland indoors.

At its core, it’s represented by icy blue and white and silvery accents. Crystals, glass, and faux snow can be present as well to emphasize the frosted appearance of the environment. However, it’s not solely confined to those stereotypical elements.

Because of its predominant neutral and cool-toned color scheme, it pairs well with touches of bright hues like red, orange, and gold. You can also transform your home into a Nordic Christmas village by inserting hints of brown.

There’s something special about classic Christmas themes that always make them a favorite even with the emerging decor trends. Beyond reliving traditions and nostalgia, they evoke genuine feelings of joy, warmth, simplicity, and elegance that brings out the true spirit of the holiday. They’re the familiar and comforting respite when the overwhelming holiday trends fall flat.
