From living areas to private spaces like bedrooms, art largely contributes to an interior’s appeal and ambiance. However, bathrooms are often seen as an exception since they’re viewed primarily for functionality, with artistic expression being secondary. And there’s a growing question on whether it’s even practical to decorate this typically humid area with anything beyond the essentials. So, should you hang art in bathrooms? Let’s explore the pros, cons, and tips to help you decide.

The Benefits of Bathroom Art

Bathrooms, like any space in your home, can be elevated with a well-chosen piece of art. This unlocks a number of spatial and mental benefits you may have overlooked.

Enhanced Look and Feel

The right art can instantly transform even the most sterile-looking bathroom into a visually appealing and relaxing retreat. Whether you’re going for spa-like tranquility or a vibrant, energizing atmosphere, the perfect piece can set the tone for this intimate space.

In addition, strategically placing bathroom art draws attention to a specific area, making the space feel larger and more balanced. Along with adding a focal point, you can harmonize it with your existing color scheme or decor for a more cohesive design.

But beyond aesthetics, it also carries a practical purpose, particularly for larger bathrooms. Art helps define different zones or sections, which is essential in creating a sense of order. For instance, a large piece of art can visually separate the bathing area from the vanity, or a series of smaller pieces can delineate a specific zone.

Positive Psychological Effect

Art possesses an undeniable power to evoke emotions and ideas. Curating pieces that resonate with you—whether they inspire joy, tranquility, curiosity, or hold personal significance—can significantly impact your mood

Aside from having a sentimental effect, hanging bathroom art allows you to showcase your personality, interests, and style. Its visual stimulation can spark creativity and fresh perspectives even while doing routines like brushing your teeth.

The Risks and Challenges Involved

While art can undoubtedly enhance a bathroom, its unique environment presents some potential downsides you need to consider.

Humidity and Moisture Damage

Bathrooms’ high moisture and humidity pose a threat to the artwork’s frame and appearance. Showering and washing up releases moisture into the air, particularly from steam produced by hot water. This can cause paint to fade, paper to warp, and even mold to grow, ultimately leading to irreparable damage.

Besides the artwork itself, the frame is equally vulnerable to moisture. Wood frames can also warp or expand, while metal frames may succumb to rust. This not only affects the artwork’s presentation but also compromises the structural integrity of the piece.

Limited Wall Space

Bathrooms, especially in older homes or smaller apartments, often lack ample space for artwork. Fixtures like plumbing and floating shelves further limit options for hanging art, forcing a choice of sparse or cluttered decoration that diminishes the impact of each piece.

High Maintenance

Bathrooms are already tough to keep clean. This becomes even more challenging when you add artwork with delicate surfaces, requiring gentler cleaning methods. On top of that, acquiring suitable artwork for a bathroom often involves an investment. The risk of damage means you might need to replace pieces more frequently, resulting in bigger expenses.

Waterproof prints, acrylic paintings, and metal and glass art are more resistant to bathroom conditions compared to other mediums. But for an additional layer of protection, choose metal or plastic frames and acid-free foam board or acrylic sheets as backing. These materials create a barrier against moisture and condensation.

Gently clean glass-protected artwork with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and smudges. However, since it’s impossible to eliminate moisture buildup in bathrooms, a dehumidifier can be a valuable addition particularly in humid climates or bathrooms with poor ventilation.

Considering all the factors, the decision to hang art in your bathroom ultimately rests on your personal preferences and priorities.

If practicality and low maintenance are your top concerns, exploring alternative decor options might be a wiser choice. Mirrors are a great option to create an illusion of space and make the room feel larger and brighter. Choose those with decorative frames or unique shapes to infuse personality and style. Moreover, strategically placing mirrors opposite windows can maximize natural light, while larger mirrors create a dramatic focal point.

Storage solutions that double as decorative elements are also an excellent approach. Shelves, vanity units, and even baskets, vases, and bins are perfect for organizing your bathroom essentials while enhancing the overall aesthetic.

On the other hand, if you’re passionate about art and willing to take some extra precautions, choosing the right bathroom art is crucial.

Bathrooms deserve more than utilitarian fixtures. With careful consideration, hanging a piece of art can transform these often-overlooked spaces where art and functionality intertwine to elevate your everyday routine.
