The Manila Interior Design Summit (MIDS) 2024, organized by the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID), concluded with a dynamic symposium on July 20, 2024, highlighting global perspectives and innovations in the design world. Held over three days from July 18 to 20, this year’s summit showcased influential voices and cutting-edge ideas, with the symposium marking a high point of engaging discussions and exchange of insights.

Benjamin Stevenson: Global Design Integration
Benjamin Stevenson of Foster + Partners took the stage with a presentation that wove together his firm’s global design projects with a research-driven approach. Stevenson highlighted the importance of integrating cultural contexts into modern architecture. He captivated the audience with insights from various projects. This included the Bloomberg Office in London, which seamlessly blends historical and contemporary elements to create a space rich in context and functionality. He also discussed The Murray Hotel in Hong Kong, illustrating how modern design techniques were employed to respect and enhance the building’s historic character. Stevenson’s examination of the BWDC Residential Tower in Manila showcased how global design principles could be adapted to local contexts, demonstrating the creative potential of merging diverse perspectives.
Jonathan Matti: Heritage and Modern Living
A prominent figure in Filipino interior design, Jonathan Matti offered a compelling exploration of balancing historical preservation with modern needs. His discussion centered on his experiences with significant projects such as the restoration of Malacañang Palace. Indonesian furniture designer Alvin Tjitrowirjo celebrated the cultural and aesthetic significance of rattan. His presentation focused on the traditional use of rattan in Indonesian design and its ongoing relevance in contemporary practices. Tjitrowirjo highlighted how this material could bridge cultural traditions with modern design needs, creating pieces that honor cultural heritage while meeting modern expectations. Lyndon Neri: Embracing Dualities

During the summit, the Asia Pacific Space Designers Association (APSDA) partnered with PIID to launch the Asia Pacific Interior Designers’ Accreditation Program (AP-ID-AP). This initiative aims to elevate interior design education standards across the Asia Pacific region. It marks a significant milestone in professional development.
