The Manila Interior Design Summit (MIDS) 2024, organized by the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID), concluded with a dynamic symposium on July 20, 2024, highlighting global perspectives and innovations in the design world. Held over three days from July 18 to 20, this year’s summit showcased influential voices and cutting-edge ideas, with the symposium marking a high point of engaging discussions and exchange of insights.

MIDS 2024 Symposium Highlights

The symposium featured a stellar lineup of industry leaders who shared their expertise and visions for the future of design.

In a panel discussion, Vignesh Kaushik of Gensler Design, Alvin Tjitrowirjo of alvinT, and Lyndon Neri of Neri & Hu Design and Research Office shared their insights on the power of collaboration in creating sustainable design.

Benjamin Stevenson: Global Design Integration

Presenting key projects of Foster + Partners, Benjamin Stevenson showcased how the firm creates modern designs without losing local identity.

Benjamin Stevenson of Foster + Partners took the stage with a presentation that wove together his firm’s global design projects with a research-driven approach. Stevenson highlighted the importance of integrating cultural contexts into modern architecture. He captivated the audience with insights from various projects. This included the Bloomberg Office in London, which seamlessly blends historical and contemporary elements to create a space rich in context and functionality. He also discussed The Murray Hotel in Hong Kong, illustrating how modern design techniques were employed to respect and enhance the building’s historic character. Stevenson’s examination of the BWDC Residential Tower in Manila showcased how global design principles could be adapted to local contexts, demonstrating the creative potential of merging diverse perspectives.

Jonathan Matti: Heritage and Modern Living

Jonathan Matti shared his experience working on heritage buildings in the country and the importance of preserving them.

A prominent figure in Filipino interior design, Jonathan Matti offered a compelling exploration of balancing historical preservation with modern needs. His discussion centered on his experiences with significant projects such as the restoration of Malacañang Palace. Matti delved into the complexities of maintaining the historical integrity of the Philippine presidential residence while updating its functionality. He also shared insights from the restoration of the Laperal Mansion and the Goldenberg Mansion. Kezia Karin illustrated the power of teamwork in honoring cultural heritage, demonstrating how cross-disciplinary efforts can tackle intricate design challenges and foster innovative, culturally meaningful solutions.

From Indonesia, Kezia Karin provided a fresh perspective on the role of collaboration in design. She showcased how design practices can respect and represent cultural heritage, drawing from her work in Indonesia. Karin highlighted how interdisciplinary teamwork could address complex design challenges and foster innovation. Her examples demonstrated how collaborative approaches can transcend barriers and create culturally resonant designs, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in enhancing creativity and addressing cultural complexities.

Vignesh Kaushik: AI and the Future of Design

Vignesh Kaushik explored the transformative role of AI and machine learning in the design process, highlighting how these technologies enhance efficiency and open up new creative avenues.

Gensler Design’s Vignesh Kaushik presented a forward-looking examination of artificial intelligence (AI) in the design process. He illustrated how AI and machine learning technologies are revolutionizing design practices by increasing efficiency and enabling new creative possibilities. Kaushik’s discussion of emerging trends in AI provided a glimpse into a future. Here, technology and creativity coalesce to unlock new potential and enhance design practices, positioning technology as a partner in the creative process rather than a replacement.

Alvin Tjitrowirjo: Cultural Significance of Rattan

Alvin Tjitrowirjo celebrated rattan’s cultural and aesthetic importance, showcasing its traditional use in Indonesian design and its relevance in modern practices.

Indonesian furniture designer Alvin Tjitrowirjo celebrated the cultural and aesthetic significance of rattan. His presentation focused on the traditional use of rattan in Indonesian design and its ongoing relevance in contemporary practices. Tjitrowirjo highlighted how this material could bridge cultural traditions with modern design needs, creating pieces that honor cultural heritage while meeting modern expectations. His work showcased the harmonious integration of traditional materials with contemporary design principles.

Lyndon Neri: Embracing Dualities

Closing the symposium with an engaging presentation, Lyndon Neri explored the fusion of traditional and modern elements, and the balance between practicality and artistry.

Lyndon Neri concluded the symposium with a presentation that combined theatricality with profound insight. He explored the interplay of contrasting elements in his work, such as blending traditional and modern aesthetics or merging functionality with artistic expression. Neri encouraged designers to embrace their unique visions and infuse their work with meaning, even when faced with challenging briefs or constraints. MIDS After-Event Festivities

Following the symposium, the after-party at Uma Nota, hosted by Civet Marketing, Inc., offered a lively and vibrant conclusion to the summit. The event provided an informal setting for networking and celebrating the summit’s success. It allowed attendees to unwind and reflect on the symposium’s insights.

Looking Ahead

During the summit, the Asia Pacific Space Designers Association (APSDA) partnered with PIID to launch the Asia Pacific Interior Designers’ Accreditation Program (AP-ID-AP). This initiative aims to elevate interior design education standards across the Asia Pacific region. It marks a significant milestone in professional development.

Officials from the APSDA, together with the PIID, officially launched the AP-ID-AP.
Keat Ong, President of the APSDA, gave a message to the PIID members for a fruitful collaboration between the two organizations.
Paolo Castro gave a thoughtful speech and gratitude for the partnership between the PIID and the APSDA.

MIDS 2024 underscored the importance of collaboration in shaping the future of design. Panel discussions and interactive sessions facilitated meaningful exchanges between industry leaders and participants. These covered topics like cultural integration, technological advancements, and sustainable practices.
