We explore nine exceptional homes that define architectural excellence in 2024. More than just structures, they are canvases for creativity and vessels for life’s most meaningful moments.
Through House: A Home That Transcends Traditional Boundaries
Through House by Jim Caumeron Design is located in a gated village in San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines. The home departs from conventional residential architecture with its innovative concept of “throughness.” This design philosophy focuses on seamless spatial flow, natural light, and strong connections to the environment. Inspired by Kazimir Malevich’s suprematist art, the structure minimizes or removes walls entirely. This approach blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.
Concrete plays a central role in the design, offering both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. Its raw, minimalist texture aligns with the project’s focus on simplicity and spatial purity. Beyond its functional use, concrete enables the flexibility needed to achieve the home’s unconventional layout.
The design prioritizes light and ventilation through strategic spatial configurations. The ground floor integrates indoor and outdoor living areas with expansive glass walls and operable windows, fostering cross-ventilation and abundant natural light. This approach enhances thermal comfort while creating a serene retreat that connects residents with the surrounding greenery.
Ultimately, Through House redefines contemporary living by encouraging a sense of discovery and engagement as residents navigate its interconnected spaces. This modern Filipino home offers a modern, minimalist lifestyle while fostering a profound connection to nature and a reprieve from urban life.

House C Balances Tradition, Innovation, and Raw Aesthetics
House C in Baguio, designed by Aris Go of Ninety Design Studio and Joelle Mendoza, is a unique residence that merges traditional Filipino architecture with modern innovation. Set on a flat site, the house honors cultural heritage through its design while introducing contemporary aesthetics and sustainable practices.
Elevated on stilts, the structure reflects traditional Filipino homes, providing functionality and a nod to cultural history. The central dome serves as a focal point for family gatherings, accommodating rituals like shared meals integral to the family’s lifestyle. Timber elements contrast with concrete to enhance coziness. The bamboo formwork creates textured walls, softening the industrial feel while adding organic warmth.
Inspired by works like those of Vo Trong Nghia Architects, the modern Filipino home integrates sustainability, emphasizing resource efficiency and a design that ages gracefully. The minimalist approach, with inverted concrete slabs replacing traditional ceilings, further aligns with the ethos of modern yet grounded design.
House C encapsulates a narrative of bridging past and present, creating a space that celebrates cultural traditions while looking forward to the future. It’s an exemplary project demonstrating how thoughtful architecture can transcend functionality to become a medium for storytelling and connection.

R House: Professional Expertise Meets Personal Narrative
R House, designed by IDr. Rossy Rojales and Bong Rojales of Hurray Design, stands as a personal and professional showcase of artistry and functionality in Tagaytay. Conceived during the pandemic, this modern barn-style home speaks to the owners’ roots and lifestyle.
Spanning 255 square meters, the house’s design contrasts a sleek anthracite façade with a warm clay brick wall and teal accents. This eclectic approach, softened by lush tropical landscaping, blends natural and industrial elements. Inside, mid-century modern and contemporary influences converge, with textured walls, wood tones, and geometric patterns enhanced by abstract art and thoughtful furniture choices.
The open-plan interior flows intuitively, with highlights such as a Japanese-inspired genkan in the foyer and a kitchen featuring teal kitkat tiles and a stone countertop. Large sliding glass doors connect the living spaces to a serene garden with bamboo-lined pathways, tropical plants, and a heated jacuzzi, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.
More than a residence, R House serves as a living portfolio for Hurray Design and GridCore Builders. Reflecting 15 years of design expertise, it embodies the firm’s philosophy of melding functionality with aesthetic appeal, resulting in a space rich with personal stories and memories. By pushing creative boundaries, R House inspires new perspectives on how modern Filipino homes can be both sustainable sanctuaries and expressive canvases for their inhabitants.

Redefining Sustainability in a Purposefully Designed Modern Home
Architect Miko delos Reyes crafted a modern home for his family that highlights the principles of natural light and ventilation. Situated in a tropical climate, the house demonstrates delos Reyes’ belief that architecture should create comfortable, efficient spaces that harmonize with the environment.
The home’s design emphasizes abundant natural light, with sunlight flooding through a skylight in the stairwell, and features strategic openings for effective cross-ventilation. These elements improve indoor air quality, reduce the need for artificial lighting and cooling, and enhance the home’s livability. Delos Reyes incorporates these principles into all his projects, ensuring a balance of light and heat while capturing the natural flow of wind.
Inspired by Geoffrey Bawa, the renowned Sri Lankan architect, delos Reyes channels tropical modernism into his design. The home’s raw concrete pillars, heirloom furniture, and upcycled materials echo Bawa’s philosophy of using natural, unadorned materials. Delos Reyes also upcycles construction leftovers, turning surplus rebar into dining table legs and a wire spool into a coffee table, further showcasing his commitment to sustainability.
For delos Reyes, sustainability extends beyond green technology. By repurposing materials and prioritizing long-term adaptability, the home becomes a dynamic space that evolves with its inhabitants, embodying his thoughtful approach to architecture. This modern Filipino home showcases how environmentally conscious design can meet aesthetic and practical needs, inspiring a rethinking of modern sustainability in architecture.

Casa Borbon’s Unique Tropical Brutalism is a Study in Concrete
Tropical brutalism celebrates the raw aesthetic of concrete while embracing tropical elements like natural ventilation and greenery. Cali Architects, led by Amon Cali, exemplifies this style in their project Casa Borbon, blending stark brutalist architecture with sustainability and functional design.
Inspired by their earlier project, Peu Brut, a minimalist, eco-conscious home, the Borbons approached Cali Architects with a brief for a multi-functional villa. They envisioned a three-bedroom residence with a pool, designed for personal use and partial rental. The result was a home that combines sculptural form and practical function.
The design prioritizes sustainability through innovative materials like polystyrene wall systems. This lightweight, thermally efficient alternative to traditional hollow blocks speeds up construction while reducing cement use. Despite its higher cost, it allowed Casa Borbon’s 150-square-meter structure to be completed in just eight months.
The modern Filipino home’s layout minimizes its footprint with cantilevered upper floors, creating dynamic protrusions. Recessed windows and large glass openings ensure ample light and ventilation, maintaining comfortable interiors while blending indoor and outdoor spaces. Inside, tropical greenery complements the concrete aesthetic, with contrasting warm woods and fabrics softening the stark lines.

The use of modern architectural lines and sustainable materials adds a contemporary edge while maintaining a strong connection to nature.
The modern Filipino home prioritizes open spaces to encourage family bonding and relaxation. Large windows and glass partitions replace internal walls, promoting connectivity and maximizing natural light. This open layout not only enhances spaciousness but also fulfills the clients’ vision of a home that fosters peace and serenity after long workdays.

K2 Residence: Designing Narratives for a Globe Trotting Couple
Situated near Makati’s bustling hubs like Circuit, Rockwell, and Poblacion, K2 Residence is a striking architectural statement blending stone, glass, concrete, and metal. Designed by Architect Stephanie Tan-Branquinho of SpaceFabrik, the home reflects a harmonious fusion of functionality and personal narrative.
The residence is a three-story structure tailored to their lifestyle. Its dark facade, contrasted against neighboring homes, hints at innovative design within. A vertical stone column unifies the building’s levels. Cascading greenery softens the concrete forms, turning the urban space into a tropical haven. Large windows and curated plants provide serenity and a connection to nature, making the home an urban retreat.
Inside, the Browns’ lives are intricately woven into the design. The second floor features a shared office and Keith’s studio, supporting their creative and professional endeavors. PK House: A Home That Floats Over the Hill
PK House, designed by 8×8 Design Studio Co., is a modern weekend home overlooking Balayan Bay in Calatagan, Batangas. Its bold architectural styling blends contemporary elements with cultural and natural influences, creating a harmonious integration with its surroundings.
Inspired by the traditional Filipino bahay kubo, PK House transitions from public to private spaces through ascending levels. A blend of glass, wood, metal, and concrete achieves an industrial aesthetic while maintaining warmth. The design reimagines vernacular motifs, incorporating the concepts of the silong and bulwagan. Silong, traditionally an under-hut space for storage or livestock, is adapted for functional living. The multipurpose bulwagan embraces flexibility for varied activities.
Sculptural metal spiral staircases provide dramatic transitions between floors. Eaves double as wraparound balconies, offering sweeping views. The open-plan design blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. This openness connects residents to the natural beauty of the sea and surrounding landscape. It creates a continuous visual link with its surroundings.
A standout feature is the silong’s long dining table, crafted from a single piece of wood and seating 16. The open layout relies on furniture arrangements to define functional areas, showcasing the owners’ lifestyle and taste. PK House’s modern interpretation of native tropical structures preserves cultural essence while meeting contemporary needs.
Through close collaboration with its client, 8×8 achieved a sophisticated and stylish modern Filipino home that pays homage to Filipino heritage while offering modern luxury and comfort.

Son House: A Haven for Art
Designed by Jagnus Design Studio, the Son House seamlessly integrates the essence of a gallery with the practicality of a home. Situated on a 548-square-meter corner lot, this project balances minimalist aesthetics, creative freedom, and functional design.
The Son House emerged from a collaborative synergy between designers and clients who shared an appreciation for color, form, and artistic expression. This partnership enabled the home to embody beauty and practicality, reflecting the philosophy that “architecture is not just about function but also about beauty and art.”
The design features clean lines, neutral tones, and an uncluttered ambiance, offering a minimalist canvas that allows art to shine. A sculptural steel staircase enhances vertical and outdoor movement, while detailed landscaping and spacious balconies extend the home’s livable areas. The material palette—predominantly concrete, glass, and wood—adds depth through contrasting textures and tones. Polished concrete floors and warm wood accents contribute to the home’s striking yet inviting atmosphere.
The Son House exemplifies how architecture can elevate everyday living into a work of art. By harmonizing functionality with artistic expression, Jagnus Design Studio created a modern Filipino home where practicality and creativity coexist beautifully.
